Holden Beach, Oak Island and Supply, North Carolina, are part of the hidden treasure of sand and surf found in Brunswick County today. Centuries ago, the area was serene and inviting and it hasn't changed much in all these years. Yet, the county's heritage can still be found in the ruins of Brunswick Town, which still bears the scars of a British attack more than 200 years ago. Rice, cotton, turpentine and pitch exports were important to the area's economy. Following the Civil War, the businesses and landowners organized to build the islands into sought-after family destinations with bridges, homes and hotels. Oak Island was the result of a merger between two smaller towns, Yaupon Beach and Long Beach. The past 100 years have marked the gradual transformation of this area from a sparsely inhabited intercoastal outpost to a thriving network of resort communities.

In fact, Holden Beach won recognition as one of the top 30 beaches in the country from the AAA Beach Vacation Travel Journal. In addition to sailing, shelling, nature watching, beachcombing, surfing and deep-sea fishing, land lovers will appreciate the challenging golf courses within 30 minutes or less of Holden Beach. Known as the "Golf Coast," there are at least 35 championship golf courses nearby. Boating, fishing and hiking are also popular island activities. During hatching season, visitors and residents alike can watch hundreds of small sea turtles "boil" out of the sand and begin their march to the ocean. The Green Swamp Preserve in Supply is a 15,000-acre nature conservancy and a fun recreational destination. And exciting annual events – such as "A Day at the Docks," in April and the "Festival By the Sea," in October – engage residents to celebrate the area's heritage.
